Eczema is painful, frustrating, and difficult to treat, especially topically. Both internal and external factors can trigger eczema symptoms and it is consistently difficult to pinpoint the source. Eczema that is caused by external irritants is called contact dermatitis, and can be triggered by such things as detergents, pollen, temperature change, bacteria, viruses and fungi. Eczema can also be triggered by internal reactions and are often accompanied by other allergic responses such as hay fever and asthma.
Internal triggers may be linked to:
- food allergies, commonly, dairy, nuts, eggs, soy and wheat
- stress, which is not a cause but can make symptoms worse
- poor digestion
- a weak immune system
- a family history of allergies and eczema
Steroid creams are often quite necessary for relief, but overuse may result in dependence and is often associated with nasty side effects. My 10 year old daughter suffers from dry, itchy eczema and I originally created this salve for her two years ago. It seems to help more than any other natural, topical product I have tried, along with removing dyes & perfumes from her laundry and bath products and removing fruit juices from her diet (major triggers for her). In the wintertime, when dry skin is traditionally at its worst, I make sure she moisturizes thoroughly every day and especially after bathing.
